Adrian’s expertiseAdrian began his career in the art market at Sotheby’s. Joining as a graduate trainee, he worked for 12 years in the Impressionist & Modern Department, becoming Senior Director in 1997. Two years later he was appointed head of Sotheby’s 19th Century European Paintings department. There he grew an extensive programme of sales that championed the diversity of the field, firmly establishing Sotheby’s as market leader. Most recently Adrian has worked for a leading Mayfair gallery, developing their private sale side of the business. In addition to his considerable experience of the leading artists of the day, from Ingres and Delacroix to Corot and Courbet, through to Picasso and Matisse, Adrian has a depth of knowledge for those artists who fall outside this central canon. Spread throughout Continental Europe these painters range from the sun dappled Impressionism of Joaquin Sorolla in Spain to the hard edged Modernism of Filla and Prochazka in Bohemia; from the enigmatic Symbolism of Khnopff and Degouve de Nunques in Belgium to the epic Nationalism of Gallen-Kallela in Finland, and the quiet contemplation of Hammershoi in Denmark; from the visceral paint strokes of August Strindberg in Sweden to the finesse of Jean-Leon Gerome in Istanbul and North Africa. | ![]() |
