Selling and Buying

Selling

Selling either privately or at auction are opposite sides of the same coin.
When selling privately a higher asking price is set, which safeguards a work’s value and minimises its exposure. This bespoke sale process can be more protracted than auction, but can appeal to buyers such as museums and institutions for whom the decision making process is slower.
By consigning a work to auction the sale process is a matter of public record. The pre-sale estimate is lower, the lot is promoted to a wide group of collectors and dealers with the aim of the work being bid up, and sold to the highest bidder on the day of the sale.

Adrian will advise which method is appropriate when selling a particular item – private sale or public auction – dependent on the circumstances including the item’s value, its commercial potential, the strength of the market and the needs or preference of the owner.

Buying

Adrian sources works privately from collectors, and through agents; he provides analysis of the asking price, and checks the provenance and condition of each work for purchasers.

Valuations & Auction

Adrian offers advice to collectors engaged in buying or selling and seeking a second opinion. He carries out valuations for clients requiring the appraisal of either an individual work or a collection.
